Carl Dahlhaus (1928-1989)

This collection of web-pages is dedicated to the German musicologist Carl Dahlhaus and his prolific writings, which, despite their influence, have remained quite inaccessible to those who do not belong to an academic institution, and (to a lesser extent) who have not studied German. His works have been compiled in the ten-volume, €1858 Gesammelte Schriften, edited by Hermann Danuser, and published by Laaber. The contents of the ten volumes, which can be found here, are summarised by the volumes' titles:

1. Allgemeine Theorie der Musik I (English: 'General Theory of Music I')
2. Allgemeine Theorie der Musik II (English: 'General Theory of Music II')
3. Alte Musik (English: 'Early Music')
4. 19. Jahrhundert I (English: '19th Century I')
5. 19. Jahrhundert II (English: '19th Century II')
6. 19. Jahrhundert III (English: '19th Century III')
7. 19. Jahrhundert IV (English: '19th Century IV')
8. 20. Jahrhundert (English: '20th Century')
9. Rezensionen (English: 'Reviews')
10. Varia (English: 'Miscellany')

There is also a supplementary volume which contains a list of Dahlhaus' publications, as well as an index. I have created four pages (including this one), which are linked below: a catalogue, which lists and details Dahlhaus' works; a 'Translations' page, which covers the quality and extent of the translation of Dahlhaus' writings; and one on secondary literature, that is, writings which study the particularities of Dahlhaus' scholarship.
